  1. 1. I would decribe it by using the adj. "shredded" which means well defined muscles. A very huge man and definitely a strong one.
What do you mean by his traits? Character traits or body traits?
    2. Unfortunately, I can't find the video.

    1. I mean, how would you describe a man that looks like this? Clever, stupid, ignorant, pompous, taciturn etc?
I am refering to the video in the previous post about ethos, pathos, logos.

  2. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

1.Arnold´s body looks exaggerated and I know that this is what bodybuilding is about. Taking your body to the edge of the limit in case of what the human bogy can achieve. I don´t think it looks good but I think it could represent determination, strength and control of the mind to keep going until you have reached your goal. This body could also represent vanity and an addiction of excessive training and bodybuilding, so in this case it has less to do with control of the mind.

2.Frequently used words in the speech, put in this order intentionally
    - I. American. Republican. Believe.

3.This speech is filled with pathos, ethos and some attempts to use logos, but with no or little logic in them. Arnold also uses a lot of ethos when he shows of his personal experiences and personal credibility.

“(...) I have traveled all over the world and I can tell you that there is no place, no country, that I more compassionate, more generous (…) than USA.”
Here we see ethos, pathos and attempted logos. Arnold says that he has been there, and he knows! I have seen it, so it I true! This statement is just not enough to cut I as an conclusion when trying to persuade something is true. This is ethos disguised as logos, topped with a little bit of pathos on top as it makes some Americans feel proud of their country.

“I saw communism with my own eyes. (…) It was common belief that the soldiers could take a man out of his own car and ship him back to the Soviet Union as slave labor.”
Here Arnold uses pathos to make the audience dislike communism and therein socialism. If the soldiers of communism were like this, then we don´t like them, they are nab and evil -and so is communism! This pathos is topped with a little bit of attempted logos. Another thing is, that Arnold says that it was common belief, not that it was actually like that. The feeling of fear and threat makes people draw to conclusions.

“And to those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say “Don´t become economic girlie men!””
This is so lame.. I can´t even believe my own ears. Instead of bringing some useful information about the economy, he says that these critics should stop being pussies. This sounds like something from kinder garden and is another example of pathos and ethos. I (Arnold) am respected and recognized, I and say that these critics are girlie men. People join him and laugh. He makes a joke that makes them feel, and then they laugh.

“The U.S. -- The U.S. economy remains the envy of the world. We have the highest economic growth of any of the world's major industrialized nations. Don't you remember the pessimism of 20 years ago when the critics said that Japan and Germany are overtaking the U.S.? Ridiculous!
Now they say that India and China are overtaking us. Now don't you believe it. We may hit a few bumps -- but America always moves ahead. That's what Americans do.
We move prosperity ahead -- We move prosperity ahead. We move freedom ahead. And we move people ahead. And under President Bush and Vice President Cheney, America's economy is moving ahead in spite of the recession they inherited and in spite of the attack on our homeland.”
Again we see pathos when he says that the U.S economy remains the envy of the world. This is to make people feel proud of their country. When he talks about the critics who said that Japan and Germany were about to overhaul th U.S, he adds that it´s ridiculous. You should not believe it. Well, I just don´t think that these answers cuts it as arguments. So again it must be ethos, cause when he says it, and he is respected and recognized, it must be true. The only argument I see in this part is

    1. This is really spot on! First of all, you make a very accurate description of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a person. A man so determined that he skipped his father´s funeral due to a competition. And this is an important trait to behold if you want to succeed in America because we are dealing with the land of opportunity as he correctly portrays it, but one must be stone-cold, controlled and determined in order to reach the dream.
Secondly, you also very accurately describe the way the speech is built i.e. the attempted use of logos is very interesting because as you mention, it is a mere attempt to fill this empty speech - there is nothing logic (depending on who you speak to) about this speech. Nevertheless, it works. He did become governor in California and that may say more about the people he is speaking to than about him.
Good quotes from text and very well analysed
He himself is ethos as he in many ways uses his career in order to put focus on Bush. People relate to him and find him amusing because he is a famous figure. You are correct that it is difficult to separate ethos and pathos all the time as patriotism is a mixture of the two. But pathos is the one that evokes feelings in the audience, which patriotism does. Whereas ethos is the only where they believe in what he is saying and thus you may say from your example that you need both them in order to convince your audience.

  3. when he mentions that Bush and Cheney inherited a recesseion, and still the economy is moving on. This must be logos.

“He knows -- He knows you don't reason with terrorists. You defeat them. He knows you can't reason with people blinded by hate. You see, they hate the power of the individual. They hate the progress of women. They hate the religious freedom of others. And they hate the liberating breeze of democracy. But ladies and gentlemen, their hate is no match for America's decency.” When Arnold speaks of these terrorists this way, it seems logic that you would not like people who were like this. When he says that the terrorist does not want progress of women, women would be hit by pathos. When he says that terrorists hate religious freedom, people who have been persecuted because of their religion is hit by pathos. So again this is pathos with attempted logos.

4.To make himself seem more reliable and trustworthy, Arnold says “(...)  I am proud to be with the Party of Abraham Lincoln, the Party of Teddy Roosevelt, the Party of Ronald Reagan and the Party of George W. Bush!” This is called sponsorship effect.

When Arnold tells us how we know if we are republican, he uses epistrophe. He makes 6 examples of what a republican would think like, and at the end of every sentence he says “Then you are a republican”

“We are -- We are the America that sends out the Peace Corps volunteers to teach our village children. We are the America that sends out the missionaries and doctors to raise up the poor and the sick. We are the America that gives more than any other country to fight AIDS in Africa and the developing world. And we are -- And we are the America that fights not for imperialism but for human rights and democracy. “ This is kind of the same as epistrophe, but here the repeated words are in the beginning of the sentences.

“We are still the lamp lighting the world “ This is a metaphor saying that America is a country that sheds light on the truth, brings knowledge and removing ignorance.

“We are one America and President Bush is defending it with all his heart and soul “ Another metaphor. Bush puts his effort in this fight for America, yes, but he does not take his heart and soul out of his body, and uses them as a shield for defense.

5.Arnold makes the American dream come to life when he tells of his own story. A scrawny little boy who made it all the way. He also says that be believes that the American dream I available for everyone. “ And one thing I learned about America is that if you work hard and if you play by the rules, this country is truly open to you. You can achieve anything.

Everything I have -- my career, my success, my family -- I owe to America.

In this country, it doesn't make any difference where you were born. It doesn't make any difference who your parents were. It doesn't make any difference if you're like me and you couldn't even speak English until you were in your twenties.
America gave me opportunities and my immigrant dreams came true. I want other people to get the same chances I did, the same opportunities. And I believe they can.”

6.I don´t like this speech! It lacks logos, and for me that makes it invalid. Nonetheless, sadly, I know that this speech and its message is endeared by many Americans. Arnold speaks to peoples pride, patriotism, self-satisfaction -and it works! It seems as though these people don´t need logos, but only pathos to jump to a conclusion. It´s stupid! ...but I works, and that is also why I don´t like this speech. It seems manipulating.

    1. 3. I understand where you are coming from. But to use the phrase "hit by pathos", I do not understand. I guess you are referring to the fact that he is using pathos, however, trying to make it look like a logical argument? Nevertheless, you do have a good point.
      4. Very well pointed out how he uses rhetorical devices. It is in general a very thorough analysis of the speech and also good arguments to why it works. I may add that people in general like entertainment more than politics, and we do have the same kind of tendency growing in Europe and Denmark.

  4. 1: A man who looks like this is first and foremost driven and hardworking. He is able to fight for what he wants and won't give up. That is some very good traits right there!
But he is also superficial and full of himself, I would think. It takes a lot of time to get that way and he is only doing it for one person -himself.

    1. Yes, it takes a lot of determination and self-control to make it look like this, and because of this, you also need to be very self-centrered.

  5. 1. How would you describe a man that looks like this? - His traits both good and bad.
He looks determined and has clearly reached some of his goals in life. He looks like a hard working person and because of his size most people would look up to him, both height and width. In other minds he would look foolish or like a steroid addict perhaps even selfish.

    2. What are the most frequent words in Arnold´s speech?
    America, Believe and I.

    3. How does he make use of the appeal forms (Ethos, Pathos, Logos*)?
It is truly clear that Pathos is the most appealing form for Arnold. Ethos also plays a small role in this speech when he talks about the communists back in Austria, but feelings are definitely his appeal.
“And trust me in my wife’s family, that’s no small achievement” many statements that makes him more human and level with his audience.

Perhaps it is because of his past as an actor, which at first was nothing but hilarious due to his very poor English and the fact that his first movies what with voiceover. The people see him as funny but yet respect him for his bodybuilding carrier and now for his progression and government post.

    4. Which rhetorical devices does he make use of? (alliteration, anaphora etc.)
Lots of anaphora repeating himself over and over to seem confident and to ensure his points. In the beginning he uses a Litores “This is like winning an Oscar. As if I would know” to humanize himself and not seem like such a authoritarian. The level of the speech is already set after that. It is not so formal when starting with a joke.
He also uses the triade many times, mentioning the same thing three times “Everything I have – my career, my success, my family…”

    5. How does he make use of the American Dream?
Not sure I understand the question right, but he is telling how he, as an immigrant, made it to the top and reached his goals.

    6. What do you like/dislike about the speech?
It is much related to feelings, lots of pathos and nearly nothing Ethos, with less Logos. But one cannot argue that it worked and Arnold told the people what they needed to hear, because he made it as Governor.
