This shows that Lilian is terrified of what might happen to her in the future. Will William come back for his revenge or not? She's uncertain of that. Therefore she places the gun under Jock's pillow so she could reach for it right away as well as defend herself in case of emergency.

Quite a superficial analysis, nevertheless, you have understood the main part of the text. What is Lillian Thurgood an example of (when you this information into consideration)?
1. Crime, poverty, different between black and white in South Africa, safety, fear, guilt,

Do you think that lying with your gun underneath your pillow and perhaps even shooting a criminal will stop people from being insecure? More guns, more safety?
• What themes does the story deal with? Apartheid, Racism, prejudice, fear, guilt, rich vs. poor, crime and Africa
• Where does the story take place? What is the importance of the setting? The story takes place in Africa in the richer area where the white people live. The houses of the white people are surrounded with ten feet high walls and a gate to protect the whites from the blacks. The poor black people know that the white people feel guilt and tries in every way to fool money out of their pockets. They start begging at the gate and if you hand them your finger, they will take your whole arm.
• Characterise Lilian Thurgood. The text takes place in Lilian Thurgoods house, who is an elderly woman (66years old) living alone with her two Alsatians who has been trained by her late husband. She is easy to manipulate with and has a weakness for those poor black people. She is elderly and weak and walks around with a cane. She has never before used a gun and does not know how to handle it. She is gullible and believes (with a whiff of suspicion) in the best of people. She is a benefactor of the old regime and that leads an accusation of guilt that the black people see as an opportunity for making more money.
Why do people feel guilt, and do they really? fear vs guilt - which feeling is the strongest when it boils down to it? It seems as if you think the poor black people are the ones to blame for the guilt? Do you feel sorry for Lilian Thurgood? What is it the author seeks to discuss?
1. Guilt, manipulation, trickery, fear, power and racism. 2. The story takes place in Africa at an older lady's home. Her home is rounded with a ten feet high wall which makes it difficult for fx. thieves to get through. 3. Lillian is an older lady, 70~80 years old. She lives alone with her two dogs by her side.
The story deal with themes such as. Guilt, apartheid aftermath and uncertainty.
The story takes place in the stoep or Afrikaans talking part of south Africa. A land where apartheid just recently is brought to an end. The settings of the story is in Lilian' Thurgoods home and garden.
Lilian Thurgood is a 66 years old. She lives with her to Alsatans or German shepherds. As a benefactor of the old regime she is living, as a pensioner, in a house with a garden surrounded by great walls. Lilian dos not own a great dial of money. She is aware of the many people getting robbed by beggars but in the name of guilt and a feeling of pity, she greets them at the gate.
What themes does the story deal with? The most important themes for this text is fear, guilt, apartheid and poverty.
Where does the story take place? What is the importance of the setting? It takes place in South Africa in the end of the Winter. The fortress' that white people live in and the poor circumstances the black people live under. Some of the black people exploit the whites fear for them and thereby blackmails them.
Characterise Lilian Thurgood. Lilian is a sixty six year old widow, who lives in a huge house with two Alsatians dogs Tor and Tembi. The house has a garden, with lots of flowers and trees and around it there is a ten feel tall fence. The two dogs are brought up to be guard dogs protecting Lilian. She and her late husband were benefactors from the "old regime" and she sometimes, when a beggar comes by, she feels guilty therefore. It irritates her, because she does not believe that the black peoples lives has something to do with hers.
1: The story deals with the obvious theme of white people feeling guilty for the way the black people have been treated during apartheid. There’s also fear of strangers and of being outside your comfort zone (Her husband is dead and she has been with him for at least 66 years) The completely empty and hopelessness of losing your spouse. 2: The story takes place in Lillian’s house and garden in South Africa. This is important because of the years of apartheid and the very violent way the black people took back their land. 3: She is an old, but brave lady who wants to live. She is a widow living with her two large dogs which her husband had trained to attack on command. When people come to beg at her gate, she has a hard time turning them down because she feels sorry for them; but she is also very afraid of them and is worried that they will rob or kill her. 4: “That night in bed, the gun in its new place under the pillow where Jock’s head used to be, she cried softly into her hands.” This symbolizes the awfulness she has experienced. She used to feel safe and secure with her husband next to her, now she has only a gun, she isn’t sure how to use. She feels alone, unsafe and despaired.
1. I think the story deals with a lot of different themes, so I have chosen those which I think are some of the mean themes. Among others are the themes: guilt, race differences between the black and white people in South Africa, racism, crime and the things it brings with it such as insecurity, fear, etc. 2. The story takes place in a richer area in South Africa. These rich/white people´s houses are surrounded with ten feet high walls and a gate to protect them from the pore/blacks. The poor/blacks knows that the rich/white feel guilt and tries in every way to fool money from them. 3. Lillian is a white sixty-six years old woman how is living in a house in one of the wealthy areas in South African (where there primary lives white people). She lives alone with her two well-trained Alsatians dogs in a house with a garden surrounded by great walls because she is a benefactor of the old regime. Lillian believes in god and is a pensioner who has her weaknesses and walks around with a cane. A lot of people are getting robbed in her area so she doesn’t feel safe, and that’s why she is so insecure. But on the other side she feel guilt if she doesn’t help the poor / the black ones and show them trust. She is gullible with just a bit of distrust, and therefore is she is easy to manipulate. 4. I have chosen the following quote “The papers were full of stories of people getting killed in their own gardens and houses, and she´d heard of husband-and-wife crime waves.” (P.126 , L.10-12) The reason I have chosen this is that I think it shows that Lillian is afraid and have some concerns about it although she helps the poor/blacks.
1) The themes in the story could be poverty, society, differences between black and white, prejudices, rights and so on. 2) The story takes place in South Africa, in a region called Transkei. Transkei is located in the Eastern Cape Province. It is a forgotten part of the country and do not seem to have developed like other regions in Africa, it is without modern day influences. The importance about the setting is the poverty and differences between black and white. The big distinction leads to uncertainty and people are frightened. Especially the white people who are resident in the region feel insecure. African Americans take advantage of the white people because they know the white people are afraid of showing racism. They know they can afford to help and squeezes the lemon to get as much as possible out of the white people. - Laura
3) Lilian Thurgood is an old lady who lives by herself in a big house in the region called Transkei. She is a nice and kind woman who wants to help the poor people in society. She is maybe a little too kind and as she puts it, she should have been hardened by now. She thinks it is a mistake and knows they are taking merciless advantage of her. It could be a big risk to put herself in. (p. 2, l. 2). Maybe they had a gun or some more people hiding outside the gate ready to rub her if she opened the gate. She is full of guilt, the guilt the white people has and where there is guilt there is an opportunity to get some. (p. 2, l. 16-21). Lilian gives something away almost every time someone stands by her gate. She feels for them in one way and wants to help, but on the other hand she wants them to go away quickly, when they got what they came for. She wants to help Wiliam and gives him money. But when he wants to work for it, she will not let him in. She is afraid of him, afraid that he is going to hurt her. But she lets him in because her guilt presses her. She does not want to show him she is afraid and wants him to see, she is a strong person. Her attitude may seem strong, but her act is more foolish than heroic. She lives in fear behind her ten feed high walls and her two dogs, but it makes her fell safe. She feels a lot of anger inside by living this way, like an inmate in her own home. When Wiliam suddenly pusses Lilians limits way too far, she takes herself in being strong and brave. She fells powerful when the dogs jump at him and even more when she manages to terrify him of her property with her gun. Her pulse raises and her heart beats fast but she feels stunned. She gets something of her chest by putting words to her feelings. She tells Wiliam never to come back, or she will shoot him. She even considers shooting him now so she is sure he will not return. She is shocked by this act and by the feelings and that knight she realizes how afraid she is and at the same time how lucky she is to be alive. It is shown in the way she cries (p. 5, l. 8-10). All in all she is a kind old woman living the wrong place, when she is alone. She is too scared and it is not possible for her to rest and feel secure. She wants to help people in need and hopes for better days in Africa. - Laura
4) “There was no one but the woman and her children, but it irked her that she should be afraid in her own home, that they thought it all right to knock on your door any time of the day or night. Was it racist if you were afraid and didn´t want to open your door to strangers? But, of course, she knew what it was. It was making good on the guilt, the guilt they were accused of having. As benefactors of the old regime, whites were shot through with guilt. And where there was guilt there was opportunity.” (p. 2, l. 13-21). These sentences describes how reality is for the white people living in South Africa, it is Lilians sights on things. You can feel the emotions coming though. There is a clear anger in the quote. She has some hidden anger inside with this problem because she knows what is best to do but goes by her heart by giving the beggars money. She even says it clearly in the end: “And where there was guilt there was opportunity.” She knows she is affected by this guilt but whishes so deeply, she could avoid the insecure feeling and stand up to the advantage. The last sentence could be a conclusion, where she puts herself in the white box, together with all the other. - laura
